Starting a Wine Cellar

If a couple enjoys wine, helping them start their own wine collection is a unique and personal gift that they can enjoy for years. When I'm on the road visiting customers, I'm often asked about ideas for a wine cellar. Here are my favorites:

  • First, find some place dark and cool in your home, like that closet under the stairs. Another nice place to store wine is a custom-built, double- insulated room in the garage.
  • Second, determine how to store the wine. Not everyone can afford redwood racks. I have some wine stored at my house in drainage pipes that are stacked and glued together with calking. Cut the pipes so that two bottles deep can fit. Make sure the neck of the bottle is sticking out slightly, so you can hang an ID tag.
  • Third, begin filling your wine cellar. When you come across a wine that you simply love, pick up a case or six bottles. Record your notes on a piece of paper and store it with those bottles, so you can keep track of what you enjoyed about it and with whom. Or, keep a wine journal. It will help you keep track of the wine you have, who you enjoyed it with, and what you thought of it.
